International Conference on Managing Intellectual Property in Universities

As a follow-up to the last two consecutive year’s successful events on the theme of managing intellectual property in universities, Bogazici University will once again be hosting an international conference on intellectual property under the same general title in between the 23rd and the 25th of May 2013.

This year’s international conference is organised in cooperation with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a specialized agency of the United Nations, European Patent Organization (EPO), and the Turkish Patent Institute (TPE), a devolved agency of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology.

The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK)’s  Marmara Research Center (MAM) and Technology and Innovation Funding Programs Directorate (TEYDEB),  R & D Engineers and Managers Association (ARGE Derneği), Science and Innovation Office of the British Consulate-General Istanbul, Ankara Patent, Ege University Science and Technology Centre (EBILTEM), Inoveon  Software Solutions, European Investment Fund (EIF) and Istanbul Venture Capital Initiative (iVCi) have all contributed in the  preparation of this year’s annual conference, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks and apppreciation to them.

As you know, the Scientific & Technological Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) has announced that they will be sponsoring 10 universities with a special (5 years + 5 years) grant to aid them in jump-starting and accelerating their Technology Transfer Offices. Earlier last fall, the Turkish Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology has also announced a ranking on their new “Entrepreneurial and Innovative University Index”. Thus, we decided to sub-title  this years conference as “TTOs: Best Practices”.

We are very honoured and happy to host esteemed guests from Oxford, Cambridge, Cornell Universities’ and Imperial College’s TTOs to share with us their success stories which will certainly guide the newly formed Turkish TTOs.

World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), European Patent Organization (EPO), Turkish Patent Institute (TPE), Scientific & Technological Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK), and Higher Education Council  (YÖK) will also share their strategic directions and policies on University – Industry Relations in general and  TTOs & Innovation in specific.

Following the joint opening ceremony for the international conference, the panels shall comprise international and local speakers as well as delegates and experts that have been invited by Boğaziçi Unversity whilst a number of roundtables on May 24th restricted only to those University TTO experts which have been successfull in TUBITAK TEYDEB’s 1513 Grant. We aim to provide a platform whereby these 10 new TTOs can share with each other their business model, organizational structure and strategic plans as well as have the opportunity to get feedback from resident experts.

There will also be two special panels; one dedicated to Technology Assessment Methodologies and Due Diligence and the other one will be conducted as a workshop in which a working model to ehnance and accelerate TTOs will be introduced.

European Investment Fund (EIF) and Istanbul Venture Capital Initiative (iVCi) will sponsor the lunch on May 24th and host the newly established TTOs at Sait Halim Pasa Yalisi where they will be able to meet and network with VC community.

The last day will be a training workshop on “Patent Search” which will be conducted by EBILTEM experts. This course will be restricted by 25 enrollments and each participant should bring their own laptop.
